Timing is everything
Life has a way of giving me what I want. But not when I want it. I wanted to move to San Francisco when I was 25, but decided to stick with a job I had in the Central Valley. When I was 40, got a job in San Francisco, and had a partner who lived there, I was not looking forward to moving up the Peninsula. She had a tiny rent-controlled apartment with a view of the bay. I found a studio overlooking an alley in the Tenderloin for the same amount of rent she was paying. I had a lot of reasons to hate San Francisco.
As a friend who moved to New York City for a few years said,"It's tough getting a toe-hold in this city. But once you've got that toe-hold, there's a stubborn sense of pride for having survived, and you can't let go." A guy mentioned in Uh oh! Someone said something bad about San Francisco probably didn't read my blog post before he moved to the city.
